Back Pain and Musculoskeletal Conditions

The Back Pain and Musculoskeletal Conditions stream includes research staff, research students and professional staff from a variety of backgrounds including physiotherapy, chiropractic, pharmacy, rheumatology, emergency medicine and orthopaedic surgery. The focus areas of this stream are improving clinical care, preventing overdiagnosis, intervention testing, children and adolescents and surgery.

Stream leader: Professor Chris Maher

BAppSc(Phty), GradDipAppSc(ExSpSc), GradDipAppSc(ManipPhty), PhD, DMedSc, FACP, FAAHMS

Professor Chris Maher is an NHMRC Principal Research Fellow and Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. His clinical training is in physiotherapy and he is a fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapy. Chris is best known for his clinical research evaluating the management of low back pain which has been published in leading journals including New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine and British Medical Journal.

Stream Leader: Professor Jane Latimer

BAppSc (Phty), GradDipAppSc (Manip Phty), PhD

Professor Jane Latimer is Deputy Director of the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health, a Professor in the School of Public Health and Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford. Her research has focused on management of spinal pain, but she has also lead research in two specific paediatric areas: fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and children with haemophilia.
